Independence Day Celebration by Al-Empower
Date: 15-08-2015
Time: 8:30 am to 11:00 am
Place: Cheshire Home, Velencia.
The
Independence Day celebration was organized in Cheshire Home, Valencia all the
members assembled with the presence of the forum coordinator Mr. Lohith
Shetty. Flag hoisting was at 9:00 am by Ms. Wilma Aranha, President of Cheshire
Home followed by National Anthem. Then a cultural programme was conducted by
the Forum to the inmates. Thirty five members of the Al-Empower forum were
present.
The Forum members donated some
needful grocery items, which were offered at the end of the programme. Fevicol
Champions' Club, Mangalore
has also been the part of the programme and they distributed sweets to spread
the happiness of 68th anniversary.
Later the secretary of
Cheshire
Home, Ms. Hazel Colaso gave brief introduction about their organisation that is
in the year 1948 the first Cheshire Home was started by Lord
Cheshire, In India there are twenty three homes and these homes work for re-habitation
of people who are unable to take care of themselves .

The Human Resource Development:
Human Resource Development (HRD, HR)
is the management and development of an organisation's manpower. MSW HR
professionals stand more competent to other HR professionals by being highly
equipped with Labour Legislations and Industrial Relations. MSW HR is
extensively exposed to understand employee welfare and employers profit
maximization throughout the course. MSW HR students from St Aloysius College
are also placed in various industrial establishments for practical exposure
training.
The field work experience that the MSW’s get throughout the year, keeps them updated with the industry news and the changing trend in HR. In the HR Specialization, students study Indian Labour Legislations such as Social Security Legislations, The Factories Act 1948, The Plantations Labour Act 1951, The Motor Transport Workers Act 1961, The Mines Act 1952, The Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act 1970, The Karnataka Shops and Establishment Act 1961, The Payment of Wages Act 1936, The Minimum Wages Act 1948, The Payment of Bonus Act 1965, The Industrial Dispute Act1947, Environmental Protection Act, The Trade Union Act 1926, The Industrial Establishment Acts 1946, Industrial Employment (Standing Orders) Act, 1946, The Provident Fund Act 1952, The Employees State Insurance Act 1948, etc, Functions and development of trade union.
Students also are exposed to Organizational Behavioural and Development dynamics. They are also taught about Recruitment Strategies, Payroll Management Strategies, Employee Grievance Handling Strategies, Manning Standards, Career Graphing, Performance Appraisal, Human Resource planning and execution, Manager Job analysis/ Gap analyst, Employee safety administration, Retention strategies, Training Planning and execution, Statutory compliance management, Management of employee relation, Compensation and benefit administration.
Regular seminars and workshops on various topics involve student’s participation and help them to be active by using their skills and potentialities not just for their academic purpose but also for the extra curriculum activities. Study tour is observed annually for 7/8 days with exposure to around 10 industries and organisations. Students also undergo Block Placements for 40 days in industries and organisations, after the 4th semester examination. Summer Placement after 2nd semester is also advised.
Field work conference which is conducted on regular basis helps students to share their practical field experience with the other students as well as it helps to enhance their presentation skills in front of their peers.

MSW (Community Development)
Community Development:
Community Development specialization
in St Aloysius College still attracts the students across India to be the
experts in working for social change at the community level. This Programme
includes theory and practicum which will enable students to specialize in
Community Development. In the III and IV semester students study the various
issues related to rural, tribal and urban development, citizen participation in
governance, and education for development. The focus has been also on the
various target groups of society such as unorganized labourers, women,
children, dalits, youth, farmers, poor, artisans etc. The specialization also
aims at enabling organized effort for sustainable development and mobilizing
the people to protect their human rights.
Field experience is an important part of the program in MSW department of St Aloysius College Mangalore. Community Development Students are given field training through placements in open communities under the guidance of Non Governmental Organisations and Local self Governments like Panchayths and City Corporations.

“KIRANA” Community Development Forum is a platform for the students
to Develop
skills and creativity. It offers opportunities for cooperation and
collaboration among students and external agencies. Team research studies are
conducted to inculcate critical thinking and reasoning skills, and to develop a
positive attitude among students towards scientific research from the beginning
of their professional life. KIRANA is a means to
enhance social interaction, leadership, healthy recreation, self-discipline and
self-confidence. A good part of education that is broadening of horizons
inculcation of values, learning to relate and to deal with others, exercise of
participative leadership etc takes place through forum activities.
On order to
supplement student’s classroom lectures, seminars and workshops are conducted

Medical and Psychiatric Social Work
Specialisation (MPSW), is an important specialisation in MSW studies. MPSW
students are placed in different health settings for field training and are
involved in clinical Social Work Practice. The students of this specialisation are
trained to equip themselves with the knowledge, skills and values necessary for
effective practice towards promoting holistic health (physical & Mental)
which includes Preventive, Promotive and Curative areas. It facilitates
students to gain knowledge and skills as a team to promote comprehensive health
care and training to find solutions to a range of psycho-social
problems associated with patient’s illness. Our students get training in
individual and group counselling and family therapy in hospital and community
health settings. They conduct Case Work, Group Work
with patients and family members. They also conduct awareness programmes
through Lectures, role plays, skits etc in schools and communities. They are
also exposed to various extension Lectures and skills workshop on important
topics in college and field settings.

order to prepare the students to become effective counsellors they are also
given training into participatory
counselling skills programmes. Annual study
tours organised every year students get exposed to different therapeutic
interventions in the field of child and women welfare, Physical and Mental
health areas etc. Annual seminar is
also organised on relevant topics essential for professional practise. Students
are also encouraged to take up small research
studies in Medical and Psychiatric areas.
Today
Drug abuse is gaining momentum among student community. Students are young
population who are attracted to modern world and its temptations. Keeping this
view the Anti-Addiction cell was introduced by the MSW Department of St. Aloysius College, Mangalore which was started as part of the decennial celebration of
the department.
Anti- addiction cell has been promoting a positive role in
preventing drug abuse and helps young
generation to look into alternative habits other than drugs, where the students strive towards organizing preventive
programmes for adolescents on Substance Abuse Prevention. They conduct participatory workshops for High School
Students. The objective is to create awareness on addiction among adolescent students and to
motivate and sensitize adolescents to take a firm decision to say “NO” to drugs and spread this message
to others through participatory learning activities. The cell also collaborates with a de-addiction centre
in conducting recreational and educational activities for the addicts and their
family members.

9. Criteria for Admissions
MSW is a two year PG course (Four
Semesters). Any graduate with minimum marks of 45% aggregate (SC / ST 40%) is
eligible for the admission in St Aloysius College for MSW Course.
